True Craft Confession: I was pleased as wassail punch with my wreath from last week's episode of Craft Wars! My tree...well...had some obvious issues, but the wreath was something I'd happily hang in my home. Yes, there were a few glue strings and boogers, but I don't usually craft at the speed of light. Glue strings and boogers are fairly easy to avoid or remove when you have the luxury of time.

With the aforementioned luxury of time on my side, I present my prettier, lump, glue string and booger free, new and improved upcycled sweater wreath for your craftertainment!

Insert holiday trumpet flourish...here.

I love the idea of turning ugly old thrift store sweaters into a fabulous new wreath. I scored the grey and a black and white striped wool blend sweaters at my Goodwill for $.25 each! Cha-ching! I actually scored a third black and grey striped sweater, but my daughter snapped that puppy right up as a night shirt. Bonus!

Without further pomp and circumstance, here's how you can make your own upcycled Craft Wars Inspired Sweater Rose Wreath. Oh and check out the links at the end of my post to see what the other Craftacular Craft Wars Vets created inspired by last week's episode!

Instead of using sweater arms for the base like I did on the show, I wrapped off-white yarn around a round wreath form. I used a saw to cut the wreath in half which made it easier to wrap. To put it back together, some 16 gauge craft wire with Aleene's Foamtastic glue did the trick.

This red pom-pom yarn was recently on clearance at my local Michaels, and it gave a fun, whimsical, candy cane look that I'm totally digging! Just wrap it around the reassembled wreath working about 1" apart.

You can use the Clover pom-pom maker to make fuzzy yarn pom-pom accents. I made two, because I loves me some pom-poms, oh yes I do!

Use old sweaters, or get some at Goodwill like I did! Cut the sweaters into triangular strips and rolled into roses. Vary the lengths and widths. A 2' length is a good starting point.

Cut two contrasting leaves as accents. Hot glue the flowers and leaves into a solid shape and attach that to the lower left side of the wreath. (Note: If you are using a sweater that might fray, try Aleene's Stop Fraying around the edges.)

Attach the pom-poms on top and bottom of the roses with hot glue. Aleene's Super Thick Tacky Glue makes quick work of adding button and rhinestone accents. It dries clear without boogers or strings, huzzah!

"These are...your grandmother's crafts. Ya gotta problem with that?"

I have <strike>hoarded</strike> gathered lots of little vintage goodies over the years. As I move often, larger items are given away, but the little trinkets and treasures come along for the journey. It is fascinating how these tiny momentoes of days past have survived. Who tossed these dice? Who scooted this little scotty dog around a Monopoly board? These little doo dads, they've seen things. They carry a small piece of history in them. I have always felt like I was born in the wrong era. Vintage things fascinate me. From my first visits to rummage sales to my years of thrift store trolling, to my years of wearing vintage head to toe, I am enamored with and deeply smitten with the past-yet firmly rooted in the present. It's a dichotomy to be sure.

Speaking of presents, variations on this theme make lovely gifts. I have stacks of old BINGO cards, with crisp and clean graphics and they make the perfect background for all sorts of fun collages. In this case, I used old game parts, letter beads, tinsel and more to make a lovely ornament with a truly vintage appeal. Add as much or as little, glitter or no, make this yours...or more aptly...make it suit the recipient. Note that all number elements on this card have something in common...what could it be? Hmmm...

Materials

Vintage or new BINGO card (you could opt to use cardstock and adhere a copy of an old card, buy a repro set or look for these on auction sites, they're fairly easy to find.)
Various small vintage or new game pieces. I used a bingo chip, a Monopoly game piece and dice (Old games are easy to score at thrift stores, flea markets or on auction sites)
Plastic letter beads to spell: "Merry Christmas"
Small chipboard scrapbook pieces 2 5
Wired red tinsel to form hanger
Silver tinsel to decorate top of card

(Mom here: Ho ho ho! It's day two of the 12 Crafts of Christmas at The Impatient Crafter blog! Huzzah! Miss Avalon made an adorable retrofabulous mini-canvas using a permission free Dover clip art image and some collage elements including an acrylic letter, rubber star stamp and a wooden snowflake. It's all put together with Aleene's Tacky Glue and made sparkly with Traci Bautista's Sparkles Collage Pauge. Love, love, love that stuff. I made my own version with a Victorian era postcard image from my ephemera collection, a vintage bottle cap, some new vintage themed collage elements, stacked stars and a sprig of tinsel. These are so incredibly fun to make...we got the canvases with coordinating easels at Michael's. You could glue the canvas to the easel, add some wire and make some super cute artist ornaments!)
Recently I was out shopping with my mom when I stumbled upon these miniature easels and canvases. I immediately knew that I had to use them for a project because they were so cute. So I bought two, one for me and one for my mom. Since Christmas is right around the corner I added Santa , a snowflake, and the rest is history. I hope you enjoy it!

It took three days, lots of juicy expletives, edits, edits and more edits and a crew of two and here we are...the latest The Impatient Crafter video. We're a little rusty around here and we only have one camera and mediocre editing software, but hey, we do what we can with what we've got! Plus, it's free people. Free!

Below please find written instructions for the Gift Card. You can get the written instructions for the Retrofabulous Stocking here. Ho, ho, happy holidaze!

Materials
Red or other colored card stock
Vintage or new used card with small Christmas icon on back
2 stackable vintage or new buttons, top button needs indent for crystal
Tulip Glam it Up Crystal
Thin decorative ribbon
Grommet
Tiny vintage or new icon image from back of greeting card
Sizzix window gift card die (Unfortunately, they no longer carry this die, so the next best bet is to cut one out yourself and score with a bone folder and use a Fiskars square punch to make a window!)
Tools
Sizzix Big Shot
Fiskars 1" Block Party Squeeze Punch
Fiskars scissors
Crop-a-dile

1. Use die cutting machine and die to cut a small gift card with tiny window. Fold in half along the crease. You can also measure, hand cut, use a bone folder to crease and use a square punch to make the window (You'd need two square punches so the image inside is bigger than the window.)

2. Use Fiskars 2" square squeeze punch to center and cut image from back of used greeting card to fit inside window. (If you are using two punches, use the 1" size to create your window.)

3. Place back of image on sticker sheet, compress and remove. Adhere to inside of gift tag, centering image as you'd like it to fit inside of the window.

4. Layer buttons and crystal. Start with largest button, placing a single glue dot on back and adhering by one of the bottom corners of the window in the tag. Next add the second button with glue dot on the back.

5. Add a dab of Aleene's Tacky glue inside of the second button, use finger tip to gently pick up and place crystal inside. Wipe off any excess glue carefully.

6. Set grommet with Crop-a-dile in upper corner of gift tag.

7. Attach pre-cut ribbon.

8. Feel free to stamp the card, add glitter, add more embellishments and make this yours!Margot Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07328794490189942896noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605819207590206494.post-7952104461294126322010-12-22T03:01:00.000-05:002010-12-22T03:01:00.510-05:00ILoveToCreate Teen Crafts: Joyful Christmas Ornament
(Note from Mom: Avalon does it again! My project is a clear ornament that you spray wit Aleene's Tacky Spray Glue and coat the inside with Crafty Chica glitter! Avalon got this first and it's just hitting Drew. We got our dang flu shots, but I swear this was the flu. It's settled into my chest, but I'm hoping I'm on the mend now. I have to get back to work! I hate being sick because I get so restless. So, yesterday I worked on the final details of this stocking project. Jewelry Television is presenting these stuffed with gifts to vets at a local VA hospital. I was so pleased to be able to do something to say, "Thank you" to those who have fought for our freedom. I'm also pleased as punch with how this turned out! I have to make one for our mantle now.

I used a scanned and sized Victorian era postcard from my ephemera collection (the card had some damage which I fixed in Photoshop) and printed it on a sticky back fabric sheet. I added glittered accents using Ranger Stickles. Aleene's Super Thick Tacky Glue worked like a charm on the rick rack, ribbon, vintage button and repurposed metal elements. It's amazing what a little creativity can do for a dollar store Christmas stocking!

Until next time...craft on with your bad selves!

Cheers,
MadgeMargot Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07328794490189942896noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605819207590206494.post-31056173346805572362009-12-23T09:36:00.000-05:002012-08-16T14:06:49.002-04:00Final Retrofabulous Christmas Craftabration Project for 2009! There are just far too many good ideas in these magazines to waste! Until then...here’s my final Retrofabulous holiday idea for 2009.

I collect vintage mercury glass ornaments and kitschy holiday decorations and I love the elaborate wreaths people make by hot gluing a ton of them on a Styrofoam or wire wreath base. They go for big bucks on eBay. (Check out this fabulous vintage ornament packed wreath from Junkhound Sally!) I personally don’t want to trap vintage goodies into a wreath forever. They’ve survived this long unscathed! I scored four tinsel garlands on super clearance after last Christmas with this project in mind. Flash forward a year...a trip to the craft store for a Styrofoam wreath and some Styrofoam balls and a gathering of pretty pink ornaments...and SHAZAM!

This wreath kicks some serious tinsel!

I could have added a lot more ornaments, but I like the simple and uncluttered look of this wreath with lots of tinsel poking through and the felty good pop art flowers. (Plus those resin and tinsel beads I scored in NYC worked perfectly!) I remembered this project concept when I saw the tin wreath from McCall’s Christmas Make-it Ideas Volume XI above. This is another 60s craft mag without a date...but based on the preponderance of thick fuzzy yarn pom-poms and the hairstyles I’m guessing late 60s. Frankly, I’d really prefer not to have a razor sharp wreath...so this soft and squishy tinsel garland does the trick! (Oh and note that I’ve worked Floam into another holiday craft project! Hee.)

Oh and...two vintage mercury glass ornaments met an untimely death while working on this project. So show me some love people!Materials
Styrofoam wreath form
4 12 foot long tinsel garland swags
8”x10” sheet hot pink craft felt
8 vintage pink mercury glass ornaments (you can buy these on eBay, but pink is pricey so go for mixed lots and collect the pink as you go, I’m a big fan of Shiny Brites)
9 2” Styrofoam balls
5 20mm and 5 15mm pink plastic beads
Hot pink Floam
18 gauge Beadalon Artistic Wire
2.5” wide silver with holographic glitter wired craft ribbon
6”x7.5” Colorbok chipboard ornament
Ranger paint dabber fuchsia
Ranger paint dabber silver
Floral vine background stamp
2” thick satin ribbon with looped edges
Sparkly pink rick rack trim (mine is vintage, but you can find similar new)
Sizzix Hello Kitty Daisies Die
Aleene’s Quick Dry Tacky Glue
Tools
Sizzix Big Shot
Round nose pliers
Chain nose pliers
Wire cutters
Straight edge item (I used a flat thin plastic ruler)
Non-stick craft sheet

1. We’re big fans of fleece around here and you can score the hats and gloves right now on sale. Why not help your teen customize a set with some easy to create ribbon accents? These would make great (and affordable) gifts for their friends. I have a small collection of vintage ribbons and buttons, but you can find similar items at your local sewing store or on the internet. Tulip fashion crystals and Aleene’s Fabric Fusion glue make it a breeze to whip up this lo-sew project.

Materials
Fleece hat
Fleece gloves
7/8” wide black satin ribbon with looped edges
7/8” wide vintage or new decorative ribbon
1 large and 2 small vintage or new red buttons
Red sewing thread
8 5mm Tulip crystals
Aleene’s Fabric Fusion glue

Tools
Scissors
Embroidery needle (you’ll need a needle that can easily pass through a thick stack of folded ribbon)
Tulip Glam it up Heat tool

1. There are tons of tutorials on the internet for lovely 3-d ribbon flowers and all of them are so complicated I decided there had to be an easier way. So I just folded ribbon around itself 3 times. Begin by folding the ribbon end into the center of a 2 ¾” section of ribbon. Wrap ribbon three times around itself. The folded ribbon sections should be 2 3/4” for the smaller flower and 3” for the larger), hold the center firmly, gently tug the ribbon folds into petals on each side (you’ll move the folds on each side in opposite directions). (See photo.)

2. For the larger all black flower, add an extra folded section of ribbon to match the ribbon on the gloves. This functions as a petal. Tack it down with a needle and thread.

4. Apply a generous bead of Fabric Fusion glue to the underside of the flower petals and tack them down. Put something under them inside of the glove and hat to prevent them from sticking the opening together. Allow to dry 2-4 hours. Don’t wash until glue has cured for 24 hours.

5. Use the heat tool to apply the crystal accents to the ribbons. Copyright 2009 Margot Potter

I had to make some on-air samples for a recent QVC appearance featuring the uniquely interesting substance known as Floam. I gathered up three oversized Styrofoam balls (courtesy of the fine folks from FloraCraft), a mini top hat created by my lovely daughter, some annealed iron wire and my collection of vintage buttons (you can buy these by the pound on eBay) and created this charming snowman. He’s currently standing guard in our entryway over a blanket of faux snow being cautiously regarded by our faux crow. I’ve got a thing for snowmen. What can I say?

Here’s how I made him, feel free to improvise with the materials you have on hand.

Materials
3 graduated Styrofoam balls (5”, 6”, 7”)
3 red buttons (vintage or new)
1 green button (vintage or new)
2 black buttons (vintage or new)
7 8mm hematite faceted beads (or other beads)
5 3.5 oz. tubs Floam in white
20 gauge annealed iron wire (or other rusty style dark craft wire or actual sticks)
Red craft felt
Mini Top Hat (black)
Tiny Tinsel Pin
Aleene’s Foamtastic Craft Glue

Tools
Round nose pliers
Chain nose pliers
Memory wire shears (annealed iron will wreck your wire cutters)
Fiskars scissors

1. Cover your Styrofoam balls with Floam. Let them dry on a non-stick silicone craft sheet. It could take a day or two, check the bottoms to adjust any drippy Floam. I made these intentionally lumpy like a real snowman.

2. Cut six 5” sections of annealed wire with memory wire shears. Put three into the center of the largest Styrofoam ball and slide on the second ball. Repeat for the next ball to create your snowman base.

3. Glue buttons as in photo. Glue on beads to form a smile. Allow glue to dry.

4. Cut a long 2.5” strip of red craft felt, repeat. Attach the ends with glue or a safety pin. Use scissors to cut fringe on both exposed ends. Wrap around the snowman’s neck.

5. Attach your mini-top hat (instructions for hat are here or you can buy a pre-made one at the craft store) using a u-shaped segment of annealed iron wire to thread it into the head of the snowman. Add your tiny tinsel pin to the front of the hat.

6. Create wire arms by wrapping a second 3” section of wire around the longer wire arms. Mine are approximately 6” long.

7. If you want your snowman to stand freely, glue him to a thick piece cardboard or wood.
Avalon showed no interest in the books at all...until last month. Then suddenly she wanted to read the first one. So we bought it. She read it in one day. Then we got the second book. Alas, she’s hooked. I thought in light of this and the incredible popularity of this series and the films, I’d be remiss as a teen craft designer if I didn’t come up with something Twilight themed.

I have always loved silhouettes. I don’t know what it is about them that I find so intriguing, but I do. I’ve been meaning to work on a silhouette craft project for a few years now, so this seemed like the perfect match. I figured fans of the film would recognize the silhouettes of the actors who play Edward and Bella...and just in case they didn't I added a “Bella & Edward 4-ever” to the other side of the framed images. You are welcome to use the template I’ve made. It’s sized to fit inside a 2”x2” frame and you’ll need to clean up any rough edges when you cut it out. I made the ornament and thought it would be a cute pendant, so I did a variation. It’s the same thing, slightly different.
Today’s retrofabulosity is courtesy of McCall’s Christmas Make-It Ideas Vol. VIII which is curiously lacking a publishing date. Based on the hair styles and the kitschy crafty deliciousness inside, it appears to be sometime in the late 1960s. There is so much good stuff in this one magazine; I could mine it for inspiration for years to come. Yay! Today’s retrofabulous project is a jaunty little elf made from beads, buttons and tinsel pipe cleaners. Their charming versions are made from lovely felt, pipe cleaners and Styrofoam balls covered with nylon stockings...love them. I’m particularly smitten with the tiny antennae...

I decided to try using beads and bits from my studio. I do love felt so, but I wanted to give it a new spin. I scored these painted wooden face beads in Manhattan, but I’m quite sure you can find similar beads online or at your local craft chains. If not, paint a plain wooden bead yourself, this is a fairly simple series of circles and lines! I would totally sport this as a necklace...seriously. It's that cute! So it falls into the 'ornapendant' category I created last year for sure!
Retrofabulous Perky Pixie Ornament
Copyright 2009 Margot Potter

Materials
30mm wooden face bead (or plain wooden bead you decorate)
1.5” white plastic button
25mm white plastic bead
10mm frosted red Lucite bead (Plaid Fresh)
2 10mm olivine moonglow vintage Lucite beads
7 9mm red moonglow vintage side drilled button Lucite beads
2 19mm olivine Lucite leaves1 30mm dark olive 3 petal Lucite flower (40mm widest side to side of petals)
2 20mm red vintage (or new) buttons
26 gauge Beadalon German style wire
18 gauge Beadalon Artistic Wire Tinned Copper

Victorian Snow Day Mixed Media Canvas
Recycled Teen Craft Idea
Margot Potter for iLoveToCreate Teen
Copyright 2009
'Mom crafted, kid approved!'

I love little canvases, not just for paintings but also for setting off a variety of mixed media art projects. This is one of those “use what you’ve got” ideas. I happen to have a generous stash of old bits and baubles around my studio, but this idea works equally as well with last year’s Christmas card and the trims and broken jewelry bits from your own drawers (or if you’re a teen, ask your mom for some stuff to use here.) If you like this vintage inspired look, you can find Victorian era postcards and old jewelry on eBay and if you don’t care about the condition (which I mostly don’t because I’m using them for my artwork) they can come very affordably. Dover Books has a huge selection of permission free images from this time period. If vintage isn’t your thing, adapt the idea to a more modern style.

I rummaged around my studio drawers for things to adhere to the edges. I had some faded old lace from an Estate Sale, broken rhinestone jewelry, old buttons and a vintage stash of Rick Rack trim. I love this silver, white and red color palette, but you can switch it up however you like. The idea in everything I do is to inspire you to be creative and make it your own. Inspiring you to ‘create without filters™’ is what I’m all about. What a fun project for Mom and teen to work on together and these make absolutely lovely gifts.
1. Select an image for your canvas. You can get this image on my website here, simply size it to fit your canvas.

2. Use a sea sponge to apply a layer of silver paint to the edges of the canvas leaving area where picture will go unpainted. Add a layer of glitter paint to canvas. Sprinkle a thin layer of glitter on top of paints and shake off excess. Allow to dry.

3. Dab the silver paint dabber on the flourish stamp to stamp around edges of frame.
The fab folks at EK Success sent me some of their GORGEOUS holiday stamps from the Inkadinkado line to try out. Those of you who follow my work know that I can't stop using my flourish stamp from Inkadinkado and these holiday stamps are sure to become regulars in my work too. The detail on them is AMAZING.

I began by stamping the reindeer clear stamp using jet black archival ink on a nice heavy weight cardstock in a fuchsia pink. (You could use this same idea on tissue or lighter weight paper to make some stunning wrapping paper and then whip up tags with cardstock to match!) I punched out the 2" circles and added accents of silver paint dabber with my favorite flourish and a writing stamp. I like to use stamps as textural elements so I'm not going for neatness on the accent stamps. Let the paint dry before the next step. I painted on some of Traci Bautista's Collage Pauge in Sparkle (just the right amount of glitter) and let it dry and then painted a second coat. I used a paintbrush because I like texture, but you can use a foam brush if you prefer a more even coat. I stuck them back to back with two sided tape runner tape and punched a hole in the top of each one. Then I attached to some of my fav Beadalon Quick Links chain with an array of CRYSTALLIZED-Swarovski Elements bicones (EK Success Jolee's Jewels has a great selection) and vintage beads.
I have been devouring the stash of 1960s vintage Christmas mags I scored on eBay recently. There are so many fabulous ideas and so many hilariously kitschy concepts I can’t stop staring at them and making my poor husband look too. OH MY GOD! Look at this one! Hahahah! Wait...look at this one! No, no...this one! Hahahaha! Insert husband eye roll here...

Here’s an ab fab project from a Family Circle publication called Christmas Helps circa 1967. There are a ton of great ideas on this two page mixed media jewelry spread and I promise to share them here soon. This delightful concoction is whipped up with pipe cleaners wrapped with yarn to make some marvelously mod jewelry. I did a more traditional Christmas themed take on the concept with a wired tinsel yarn, a vintage miniature wooden accent and some sparkly CRYSTALLIZED™-Swarovski Elements. You can find tiny holiday themed items at your local craft store and any beads or buttons or sequins will work here. Liquid Fusion helps secure things together.

(I have a huge yarn stash with some wildly fun fibers. Think of all of the funky things you could make with a wire base wrapped with yarn! I’d love to do a big bib style necklace of connected yarn circles...which is exactly the sort of kooky thing I’d make and never be able to sell for publication. Rather than spend beaucoup bucks on new cards, why not upcycle some oldies but goodies? I have a collection of fun vintage cards, but many of them are already used. I love repurposing them in my design work. (You don’t have to use vintage cards, any used holiday cards will do.) You need cards with figural images you can frame with dimensional paint and then cut out in silhouette. It’s easy to give old cards new life with Tulip dimensional paints and glitters! Teens will love this project and it’s a great way to get them excited about upcycling and handmade holidays. Miss Avalon just loved this snowman.

Gather up dimensional paints and glitters and make an afternoon out of creating your own wonderful, heartfelt and handcrafted creations with your teen.

Materials
Used holiday cards with bold figural images
Heavy duty cardstock
Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint in silver
Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint with silver glitter
Tulip Fashion Glitter in White Pearl
Ranger Adirondack Pigment stamp pad in snow cap
Small clear snowflake stamp (I used a clear stamp from Inkadinado for EK Success)
Clear stamp base
Scissors
Bone Folder
Paper cutter
Ruler

1. Much of my collections have been pared down due to the lack of storage here at our little school house and my many moves. The one collection I can keep expanding and justify for my work is my ephemera. That’s a fancy word for vintage paper. I just scored a little stash of 1950s era Christmas cards and I knew I had to use them for an iLoveToCreate project. (Truth be told these aren’t much older than me...which of course makes me vintage but I’m in denial.)

This frame cost a buck and the rest of the supplies are very affordable. You can find lots of vintage cards on Etsy or eBay. They’re super cheap and super fun for your artwork. My daughter finally fessed up to knowing the 411 on the jolly old elf, but we’ve known for a while she had it figured out. I just wanted to keep that Christmas magic alive as long as possible. This is a great holiday pic of Avalon from a few years back and I thought it could make a terrific gift for one of her Grandmothers or for us to use in our regular holiday décor. Teens can have a lot of fun with this project, and they get to enjoy a little bit of Christmas past if you use vintage cards. (Note: Don’t scan and copy the images from the cards and use them again, these images are under copyright. You can cut them out and use the physical card, but you can not reproduce the images. US copyright protection lasts 100 years.)

Materials
One wooden frame with heart shaped opening
Wired tinsel
Image from vintage greeting card
Text from vintage greeting card
Green cardstock
Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue
Aleene’s Liquid Fusion
Crafty Chica Little Paints White
Tulip Fashion Glitter White Pearl
Archival ink jet black
Adirondack ink red pepper
EK Success clear snowflake stamp
Inkadinkado flourish stamp
Dimensional foam stickers
EK Success metallic writer pen in silver

Tools
Martha Stewart lace edge punch
Scissors
Paper cutter
Tracing pen or pencil
Paint brush

1. Wrap 24 gauge German style plated wire around one side of handle about 3 times. Continue to wrap it around the length of the handle leaving space between your loops.

3. When you reach the opposite side wrap the wire around about 10 times, cut the excess wire and tuck it under with chain nose pliers. This wrapping doesn’t have to be perfectly perfect, in fact the less perfect, the more rustic and primitive this design will be. It’s up to you how you want it to look!

6. Halloween and Christmas are some of the best times to score cheap vintage craft supplies at your local thrift shops. I got a bag full of random fun last week and inside I found these awesome 3” resin wreaths. I attended a cocktail party on Friday night and brought a bottle of champagne for the hosts. I started to pick up an overpriced wine gift bag at the liquor store when I stopped myself. Come on, crafty sista, you can make something! Thusly, this mini wreath wine bottle ornament idea was born.
1. Cut off about a 3’ length of fuzzy wire, if you run out you can patch more in as you wrap. Begin by wrapping wire tightly around the top of the wreath, wrapping the wire over the tail to conceal it.

2. Continue wrapping wire around wreath, making sure not to leave any exposed spaces.
3. When you reach the other side, tuck the tail into the back of the wreath and cut off any excess wire.

4. Cut off a 2’ length of Colourcraft wire. Wrap it around top of wreath and twist end around core wire to conceal.

5. Thread six crystal bicones on the wire, leaving the back wire bead free, wrap the beads around the front of the wreath. You want to create tension so the beads stay in place.
Oh heck I make a lot of revamped everything, it comes from years of shopping in thrift stores and flea markets and having to make something out of nothing. My corporation is called Two Sticks and a Rock, Inc., because with two sticks and a rock and a little imagination you can make anything. I even revamp myself every few years for good measure.

Sometimes I see something that is almost there but not quite and I add a little dash of extra spice and voila...fabulous! When it comes to my own personal pieces, honestly I'm often so busy I don't have time to sit and make something complex to wear to a party or a trade show. Forever 21 always has interesting jewelry for sale at ridiculously low prices, sometimes I buy stuff just for the components so I can rework them into something else. I have a mod wired crystal necklace in Simply Beads this month that I did with a piece I bought there last year. Here's a link to the project photo and description online. The reason I'm sharing these projects is to show you that you can do this too, even with stuff you probably have in your jewelry boxes or can score really cheaply at a flea market or yard sale or thrift store. You don't always have to start from scratch and reinvent the wheel. I like to think of this as being like the cake mix recipes. You have a foundation and you build upon it. You can take it as far as you want to or keep it simple like I did here.

In this case, I took this $4.80 brass necklace from Forever 21 and started by removing their inconsistently applied finish with alcohol ink blending solution on a felt applicator. Then I inked the pendants with jet black alcohol inks, dabbing them on and rubbing across the surface with a felt applicator to brush the ink off of the raised areas and let it settle into the crevices. My fingers and nails turned black in the process, so if you've got a big night on the town you may want to wear rubber gloves!

I let the ink dry and then added CRYSTALLIZED-Swarovski Elements 11mmx5.5mm briolettes in jet and crystal ab on 6mm gold plated jump rings to the spaces at the bottom of the pendants. Voila...instant Haute Couture!

This necklace is HUGE and looks so amazing on you can not believe it cost so little to make. This would be the perfect gift for a friend who likes her jewelry big and bold. You can opt for other beads at the bottom of each pendant, maybe even a more colorful peacock inspired palette. That, my dear, is entirely up to you!

Cheers,
Madge Margot Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07328794490189942896noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605819207590206494.post-37943306576959269042008-12-09T03:01:00.000-05:002008-12-09T07:57:29.458-05:00The Impatient Crafter™ Free Holiday Craft Idea Instant Ancestor Frame Copyright 2005 Margot Potter (Click on Image to View Close Up)

'A Victorian photograph is scanned, printed, hand tinted, cut out and placed in a frame that is encrusted with CRYSTALLIZED™-Swarovski Elements. Use old broken rhinestone jewelry, chains and beads to save money or you buy new sparklies if you prefer. I did this project for a magazine a few years back and it’s still a personal favorite. You’ll need Beadalon Colourcraft 20 gauge wire, a filigree style gunmetal frame, various elements to embellish your frame, gun metal findings from Rings 'n Things and a vintage Victorian era image. To wrap the crystals around the edges, bead the wire as you go along the way, leaving the backside unembellished and keep the wire fairly tight. Don't make it too tight or you'll break the crystals, yes it takes a little trial and error so practice with cheaper beads! The other items are secured with wire that is twisted with chain nose pliers and tucked into the back of the frame.

You can find these old images at antique shops, in Dover books or at permission free image sources online. I’ve been collecting them for years. My great grandfather was a famous photographer who specialized in hand tinted images; some of his work is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I’ve always found hand tinted photos incredibly fascinating and have played with making them for years using eye shadows, markers and pastels. You can also consider hand tinting a black and white print of a modern image for this project. Adapt this idea to suit your needs; that’s what projects from the The Impatient Crafter™ are all about!

Until next time...craft on with your bad selves!

Cheers
MargotMargot Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07328794490189942896noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605819207590206494.post-22660446785020633632008-12-08T03:01:00.000-05:002008-12-08T07:33:07.774-05:00The Impatient Crafter™ Free Holiday Craft Project Obama Ornament Obama Ornament Sparkly Copyright 2008 Margot Potter

Obama Ornament Copyright 2008 Margot Potter

(Click on images to see close up)

The Impatient Crafter™ Free Holiday Craft Project Obama Ornament

As soon as I saw these beautiful vinyl stickers from MoveOn.org created by the ‘Hope’ poster artist Shepard Fairey, I knew they’d make a perfect commemorative ornament. Anyone who wants can sign up for a free one at the Move On site via the link in the instructions below. No matter how you voted this past election, we all have to agree it was a moment of historical significance. You can use a sticker from the candidate of your choice, but we loved the vintage appeal of the graphics on this one. Well that and we voted for Obama and since our sign got stolen twice, this is our permanent sign for every holiday to come. Politics aside, it’s a gorgeous work of art and I love how these turned out. I did a sparkly and a non-sparkly version and they’re both fabulous.

Margot Potter
The Impatient Crafter™
Obama Ornament (or as we like to call them Obamornaments!)
For personal use only not for resale

Materials
MoveOn.org vinyl Obama sticker
Die Cuts with a View Mat Chipboard Stack in black and white
2 Grommets
Sparkly wired fringe or other decorative wire for hanger (try the big box craft chains for fuzzy wire.)
Optional Stickles in star dust, waterfall and Xmas red for accents

Tools
Paper Cutter
Scissors
Crop-a-dile OR
Grommet setter
Hole punch

1. (I used my Crop-a-dile for both functions.)

5. You can optionally decorate some of the red and blue elements with Stickles. I used red and blue on the face, red on the border and the star dust color on the background of people to give it a little holiday sparkle.

6. I have had a stack of boxes of empty metal bindi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bindi_(decoration) tins sitting on a shelf in my studio for several years. I’d not yet devised a project for them, until this weekend when it occurred to me how much I love dioramas and those little sugar eggs you get at Easter and oh heck anything miniature and three dimensional for that matter. So after some trial, error, thinking and rethinking, I came up with these fun and easy to recreate ornaments you can make with virtually any tiny tins you have in your stash. I collect vintage paper and I’m always devising new ways to use it in my work. Be careful because I’m seriously warning you that these are addictive. I’ve only begun to make them! Now I’m scouring the thrift shops for miniature items to make tiny holiday scenes in them! (You can also use old Altoid or Fisherman’s friend tins to make larger dioramas.)

2. Cut out paper slightly smaller than outline so it fits inside of tin.

3. Glue paper into tin and let dry.

4. (I edged the images with a coordinating Stickles color and on one I added glitter all along the inside edge, which turned out really nicely when it dried.)

5. If you want to add text, stamp letters on a thicker card stock or scrapbook paper using archival ink. Each letter paper should be about ½” tall.

6. Trace bottom of tin along letters where they will be placed inside of tin. (The letters should have a slightly curved bottom.) Cut them out.

7. Cut out small strips of paper to make stands.

8. Glue paper to back of letters allowing some paper (about ¼”) to be bent on bottom. This will create your stand.

9. Glue letters to inside bottom of tin and allow to dry. Trim tops of letters if there is overlap.

10. If you are creating a stand up image, create your background and decorate it and allow to dry.

11. Decorate the stand up image and allow to dry.

12. Make a stand as before big enough to support your image.

13. Glue into tin.

14. Measure and mark even side hole placement for handles.

15. Use two-hole punch to create holes for handles.

16. Thread about a 3-4” length of Colourcraft wire into tin and use round nose pliers to bend into a small loop. Bend wire gently over your fingers to round and insert into hole on other side. Cut off any excess wire and loop with round nose pliers to secure.

17. Wrap wire handle with fuzzy tinsel ribbon. Cut off excess and tuck in ends.

You can hang them with the clear glass lids on or off. I like them off so that you can really see the detail. When storing the dioramas use the lids so they stay lovely for years to come!

Cheers,
